This program is designed to teach students the knowledge and skills necessary for job entry in the field of bricklaying and masonry. The Bricklaying and Masonry Program prepares graduates to work as brick or block masons for both residential and commercial construction.

 The emphasis of the program is on learning proper building techniques and procedures through hands-on projects. Students mix and spread mortar, lay brick and block, level, plumb, in-range, and build corners. They build walls, arches, and fireplaces. Students also take courses in job-related math, communications, plan reading, estimating, and customer and job relations to compliment their skills.


Career Opportunities
Many new openings are being created by increased construction activity, but most openings are the replacement of current workers due to retirements or job changes. Large and small construction companies are looking for experienced bricklayers and masons. Nationally 25 percent of bricklayers/masons are self-employed, contracting out smaller jobs such as fireplaces, walkways, patios, and house facades. There are currently many employment opportunities both statewide and in Southwest Wisconsin. Regional employers were instrumental in starting the Bricklaying & Masonry program at Southwest Tech.

Program Outcomes
At the completion of this program, graduates will be able to:
  • Lay masonry units within accepted bricklaying standards.
  • Read blueprints for communication and construction.
  • Build basic masonry structures including arches.
  • Identify and correct job hazards for a safe work environment.
  • Demonstrate ability to perform basic first aid and CPR.
  • Demonstrate professional responsibility at the work site.
  • Perform math skills necessary to provide quality estimates and structures.
Program Basics
  • Technical diploma, with a minimum of one year to complete.
  • Day classes.
  • High school articulation courses accepted.
  • Financial aid available.
  • Classes start in August.
Program Admission Requirements
  • Complete required assessment testing.
  • Complete the application form.
  • Interview with counselor.
  • Pay a $30 nonrefundable application fee.
  • Submit high school and any post-secondary transcripts.
  • Students may re-apply to be admitted to a program for which they initially do not meet the Student Academic Achievement Plan (SAAP) criteria after they follow the additional courses and alternate program sequence prescibed for them.
