Adult Basic Education

What is Adult Basic Education?

Adult Basic Education is a series of courses for individuals who seek to increase knowledge or refresh skills in core academic areas. A variety of courses are offered in the following areas: English, math, reading, social studies, science, civics, health, English as a Second Language, and employability skills. Courses are individually paced and/or offered as group instruction. The course level is dependent upon an assessment given by the instructors. ALL COURSES ARE FREE.

Why take Adult Basic Education courses?

Individuals enroll for reasons such as these:

  • Obtain a GED or HSED.
  • Prepare for entry into post-secondary courses.
  • Prepare for employment by refreshing math, reading, or writing skills.
  • Earn high school credits.
  • Learn to speak English.
  • Receive parallel academic support while taking a college course.
  • Fulfill personal goals.

Where do I enroll for Adult Basic Education courses?

Courses are offered on our Fennimore campus in Rooms 107 and 109, Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Courses are also offered at various Southwest Tech Outreach Sites throughout the region. What are Outreach Basic Education Classes?

Outreach Basic Education Classes are held in many communities throughout the Southwest Tech District. Students enrolled in these classes receive individual instruction to update skills necessary to complete the requirements to obtain a general education development certificate (GED) or a high school equivalency diploma (HSED), or to study English as a second language.

While I complete Basic Education, are career planning services available?

Career planning services are offered at our Fennimore campus as well as your local Job Center. These services are provided by Southwest Tech and the Job Center as a free public service.
