The Administrative Professional program prepares you to be a vital member of today's office team. As an administrative professional, you will be equipped with the latest technology, communication, and professional skills. The program will focus on developing knowledge of administrative office procedures along with needed skills in today's software packages including word processing, spreadsheet, database, web/desktop publishing, presentation, and personal information management. With experience and additional training, you will have the potential for supervisory positions.

Employment opportunities remain excellent in this field. Job openings are available in virtually every type of business or institution and in almost every geographic area. The demand for workers with office technology skills has been greater than the supply for the past ten years. This shortage of qualified workers is expected to continue as business, industry, and governmental services expand. Graduates of this program may find employment in a variety of jobs such as:
  • Office Support Specialist: Works with a variety of software applications; retrieves and enters computer information to assist management in decision-making responsibilities.
  • Receptionist: Serves as the front line office person meeting/greeting customers, answering telephones, and performing other general office duties.
  • Office Clerks: Completes a broad range of administrative tasks that could include answering telephones, typing, filing, and data entry.
  • Information Clerks: Provides administrative and clerical support in a variety of settings, maintains records, collects data and information, and responds to customers’ questions/concerns.
  • Administrative Professional/Administrative Assistant: Prioritizes and performs multiple office tasks for one or several executives and could include arranging meetings/travel, taking meeting minutes, composing correspondence, filing, and supporting other staff.
  • Executive Secretary/Secretary: Performs routine clerical and organizational tasks, composes messages, schedules appointments, and supports other staff.
  • Customer Service Representatives: Interacts with customers on behalf of an organization, provides information about products/services, and responds to customer complaints.

  • Associate degree, requiring at least two years to complete. Second year of program can be completed either online or face to face.

  • Medical Terminology can be taken as an elective in the Administrative Professional program to open even more doors for medical office positions.

Program Admission Requirements
  • Complete required assessment testing.
  • Complete the application form.
  • Interview with counselor.
  • Pay a $30 nonrefundable application fee.
  • Submit high school and any post-secondary transcripts.
  • Students may re-apply to be admitted to a program for which they initially do not meet the Student Academic Achievement Plan (SAAP) criteria after they follow the additional courses and alternate program sequence prescribed for them.

Technical Skill Attainment

This TSA (Technical Skill Attainment) scoring guide will be used to document your attainment of technical program outcomes for the Administrative Professional Degree. To meet the requirements on the scoring guide, you will be asked to draw upon the skills and concepts that have been developed throughout the program and are necessary for successful employment in your field. Results will be used to inspire continual improvement of teaching and learning in Wisconsin Technical College System. In addition, this assessment will provide feedback to you about your performance.
