Fennimore Outreach Center Spotlight – Maggie May

Fennimore -

Maggie May is an adjunct instructor at the Fennimore Outreach Center.

Where are you from/where do you live? I grew up in Milwaukee, but I now live in Richland Center.

How did you get into education? My younger brother faced challenges learning how to read in his early elementary years. He worked with an amazing special education teacher that tailored instruction to meet his needs. Observing her classroom allowed me to see that there are alternatives to a one-size fits all style of teaching and inspired me to go into education.

Maggie May

What do you enjoy about teaching? I love getting to know my students and collaborating with them to figure out what will work best to help them meet their goals.

What does the outreach center offer? Our outreach center offers preparation for GED and HSED completion, instruction to help improve basic academic skills (reading, writing, and math), English language classes, job skills, and basic computer skills instruction.

Why is the outreach center important to the community? Our free classes and flexible scheduling offer adults the opportunity to improve their skills to obtain or improve employment, pursue postsecondary education, or achieve an educational goal they have always had for personal satisfaction.

What is it like when a student earns his/her GED/HSED? There is a huge sense of pride when a student earns a GED or HSED. We are proud of the student, other students are proud of their classmate, and, most of all, the student is proud of his or her own accomplishment.

What feedback have you received from students who have received training or education at the center? Our students consistently report an increase in self-confidence after working in our classroom. Everyone is capable of learning, but the traditional school setting has not been successful for many of our students. Our students realize how capable they truly are!
