Spring graduation taking on new look in 2021
Fennimore -The Southwest Wisconsin Technical College spring graduation celebration will look a bit different this year, given the persistence of COVID-19 since 2020. Progress has been made, however, an in-person, traditional ceremony will not be held this spring. Instead, the Southwest Tech Graduation Planning Committee, with input from college administration, has settled on a Graduation CARcade on Saturday, May 22. A rain date is scheduled for Sunday, May 23.
The event will include a vehicle procession across campus. Each graduate is allowed to bring one vehicle. The graduate will receive his or her diploma cover and have their photo professionally taken. Each graduate will also receive a gift that day.
“Unique circumstances call for unique solutions,” said Dr. Jason Wood, Southwest Tech president. “We look forward to honoring all of our graduates in May. I am hopeful to see long lines of vehicles across campus and happy faces that day.”
There will not be a spectator area for family or friends during the CARcade, however, they will be allowed to ride in the graduates’ vehicle. College faculty and staff will be stationed along the route, cheering on the graduates.
“Our students work extremely hard to get to this point,” said Danielle Seippel, registrar and chairperson of the Graduation Planning Committee. “We had numerous discussions about finding a way to honor their commitment to their education and reaching this goal. We are excited to see our graduates in their caps and gowns again and to have the opportunity to show them how proud we are of their accomplishments.”
If interested in participating in the Graduation CARcade, students must submit their Program Completion Applications by March 24 at 5 p.m., to guarantee arrival of graduation materials.
Specific schedule details of the day, including times, are still being finalized and will be made public. More information can be found at www.swtc.edu/graduation.
