Lau serving her community following tragedy

Fennimore -

For Katie Lau, being an EMT wasn’t always the plan. Having committed to serving her community in 2017 as an Emergency Medical Responder on the Cassville Rescue Squad, Lau has continued to take courses at Southwest Wisconsin Technical College to further her knowledge in better assisting her community. In January 2021, she earned the title of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).

Woman looking forward

Katie Lau

After being a spectator at the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013, she began thinking about serving with her hometown rescue squad. At the time she felt helpless and wished there was more she could have done to help those who were affected.

In 2017, Lau took the leap of faith and joined the Cassville Rescue Squad when the village had a shortage of volunteers. She didn’t think twice about joining when she heard they were in need of members.

Choosing Southwest Tech to become certified was a no-brainer for Lau. She knew many instructors are from the area and are committed to serving their communities as well. Southwest Tech was also the closest and most flexible option.

“I really appreciated having the lecture night be virtual—it saved me a lot of driving time,” she said. “My hands-on instructor, Deb Hoffman, was amazing and I couldn’t have done it without her help.”

Becoming a certified EMT gave Lau the chance to become more involved in her community in more ways than one. Not only is she able to help assist those in need but she has also made lifelong friendships.

“If you are interested [in becoming an EMT] sign up for the class,” encourages Lau. “Talk to people who are currently on the squad in your community if you have questions or concerns about time commitments or passing the courses. I think everyone in the area is always looking  for more volunteers and would love to help you as you get started.”
