Hannah Masters, a Criminal Justice Studies program student from Kendall, Wisconsin, has been selected as the state student ambassador from Southwest Wisconsin Technical College. Each of Wisconsin’s 16 technical colleges selects one student every year to participate in a leadership development and recognition program sponsored by Baird, a global, employee-owned, Milwaukee-based financial services firm. After a day of team building and leadership development, the students are celebrated at a formal banquet attended by family members, System and college leaders and other invited guests. There, the students receive an award and scholarship and share stories of determination, perseverance and success. The banquet was held virtually earlier this year. The students officially serve as WTCS ambassadors for one year and, unofficially, for a lifetime.
On campus, Masters works as a student security officer as well as a student ambassador. She knew from a young age that she wanted a career in law enforcement. “I’ve always wanted to be a police officer,” she said.
Masters plans to participate in the Southwest Tech Law Enforcement Academy this summer. Upon graduation this fall, she would like to move back somewhere near Kendall and work for a police department in the area.
Masters’ interest in the state student ambassador position came after her experience as a student ambassador on the Southwest Tech campus.
“It has completely changed my life,” she said. “I am a completely different person than who I was before. I have gained more responsibilities and all of the good things that can come out of college have happened here.”
As the state student ambassador, Masters will be a prominent face of Southwest Tech. She has already attended a leadership conference and looks forward to future responsibilities with the role. She will be touring high schools with Southwest Tech recruiters and giving a first-person account of all the great opportunities the college has to offer.
Masters is thrilled with her choice to enroll at Southwest Tech, and, in addition, her choices to get involved on campus. “If you get involved, you get to know the campus better,” she said. “You get to know people better. I have made a lot of friends because of my involvement. It gives you a better idea of how things work and the impact that students make on the campus. It’s important to put yourself out there to give you opportunities that you didn’t think you had.”
