Southwest Tech Spotlight: Caleb Aloisi

Caleb was born in Missouri, moved to Vermont, and then his family made Viroqua, Wisconsin their home when he was six years old.

His father manages a fish hatchery in Genoa, which helped Caleb develop his love of the outdoors and outdoor sports. After his oldest two siblings had experienced a couple of years in the public school system, Caleb’s mom decided she wanted to be involved in the education of her children and made the decision to homeschool.

“It was an interesting experience. I think everyone believes that homeschooled kids have a hard time making friends and aren’t sociable. It can be hard, but my family was outgoing and met other families in our community. I liked being homeschooled. It helped me become a self-driven individual because I had to do everything myself and be disciplined.”

Caleb knew from the age of five that he wanted to be a police officer when he grew up.

“I’m a thrill seeker and I can’t think of any other career that would be as interesting or unique. I always enjoyed watching cop shows on TV and when I would see cops out in the community, I wanted to talk to them. It was like they were a celebrity. I really have a strong respect for what they do. I even had the opportunity to go on a ride along with officers from Viroqua.”

In July 2014, Caleb worked at Vernon Manor in Viroqua where he enjoyed helping the residents.

“I loved being able to interact with them as they don’t get to opportunity to talk with many people. I gained so much respect for the elderly and what they have to go through in their daily lives. I think they were all sad when I left.”

When the time came to explore colleges, Caleb knew he was looking for a strong Criminal Justice program and weighed his options on what college to attend.

“Southwest Tech offers the Law Enforcement 720 Academy along with the program, so that was a big draw. I have also heard such positive comments about the Criminal Justice – Law Enforcement program here. It was a pretty easy decision.”

So far, Caleb is enjoying his experience at Southwest Tech.

“It has been everything I expected, learning about the law and exploring real life expectations. My instructors are great at turning classroom situations into real life scenarios.”

Caleb is exploring transferring his credits to earn a bachelor degree once he completes his associate degree, but hasn’t officially made that decision yet.

In his spare time, Caleb enjoys conquering his fear of heights with rock climbing when he’s not spending time with his nieces and nephews.
