Women’s History Month profile | Matilyn Terpstra

Fennimore -
Women’s History Month

Each year, March is recognized as Women’s History Month. This year’s theme is “Women Providing Healing, Promoting Health,” which recognizes the many ways in which women have provided healing and hope to humanity for countless generations.

Throughout the month we are featuring our students, both in traditional and non-traditional programs, as well as those involved in athletics on campus. #SWTCProud

What brought you to Southwest Tech?
There are multiple things; I liked what Southwest Tech had to offer. The college is located a perfect distance from where I grew up. The staff was super welcoming, and there are so many resources students can utilize here. You can tell the staff wants you to succeed. I loved how the health science center building was set up. Nothing is more important to me than being able to learn tasks hands on. There were so many resources I could utilize throughout my time here to get the best education possible.

When do you graduate? What are your plans after graduation?
I am set to graduate this May. I start my clinical rotation in April with hopes of learning even more than I do now. I hope to get a job in family practice/pediatrics in a clinic near me!

What empowers you to complete your education in your field?
I have always wanted to pursue a career in healthcare. After being a CNA for a while, I knew that helping others is what I was meant to do. There is no better feeling than being able to help others around you. It is safe to say that the pandemic has changed my outlook on healthcare completely!
How does Southwest Tech empower you to complete your goals?
My instructors have made an impact on me throughout this program. They are people I have looked up to, and they show you how important it is to be there for others. Seeing how much passion they have towards their profession makes me want to be that way towards my patients in the future. They want you to succeed and are there for you every step of the way. Their support makes it so much easier to reach our goals!
