Schulist chosen for Future Nursing Leader Award
Fennimore -Allison Schulist, an Associate Degree Nursing student at Southwest Wisconsin Technical College, has been selected for the Future Nursing Leader Award. The honor is presented by the Wisconsin Nurses Association (WNA). The award recognizes leadership during the educational process.
Schulist, a native of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, will be graduating Dec. 15. She has already accepted a med-surg nursing position at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin.
“This award means a lot to me,” said Schulist. “It solidifies the fact that Southwest Tech instructors see their students. I am humbled to have been chosen for such an award and will use this to create a foundation for myself in my career. I always have held myself to a high standard and because of that, I can be very hard on myself. This award shows me that I will be the best nurse I can be and makes me proud of the person I am becoming. Nursing school is hard and knowing that I am going to graduate with such an honor, is something that I will forever pride myself on. I value my perseverance through the program as I had some struggles along the way, but I never gave up and this award is a reminder of that quality. No matter what obstacles get in my way, I can conquer them and help those around me conquer theirs too. My classmates are my team, and we helped each other through this program together.”
Elizabeth Markham, PhD, RN, president of the WNA, informed Schulist of the award. “This award includes a one-year free membership to the American Nurses Association (ANA) and the Wisconsin Nurses Association,” stated Markham, in the letter. “The ANA is the only full- service professional organization representing the interests of the nation’s 3.4 million registered nurses; as a constituent member, WNA provides the same service for Wisconsin’s 90,000 RNs. In addition to complimentary membership, we also want to provide you with the opportunity to serve as a member of any one of WNA’s three Councils: The Nursing Practice and Quality, Education, and Research Council; Workforce Advocacy; or the Public Policy Council. There are Task Forces that you may also be appointed to by the WNA Board that are currently working on several topics, as well as Mutual Interest Groups (MIGs) that focus on certain topics. These three types of groups provide for real-time leadership growth.”
Schulist’s long-term goal is to go back and receive her nurse practitioner license and practice in the area.
Schulist will also be one of the student speakers during commencement on Dec. 15. “Southwest Tech has an abundance of opportunities for their students that cannot be matched at any other technical school in the area,” she said. “The nursing program, though tough, has some of the most dedicated and passionate instructors I have ever known. The school itself provides resources to students of all kinds; traditional and nontraditional. The aura and reputation SWTC has in the area and displays to the community is admirable for a small-town technical college.”
