Volunteer mentors guide success of Outdoor Skills Day

The Grant County Outdoor Sports Alliance, along with Southwest Tech, held its 9th annual Outdoor Skills Day at Southwest Tech on Feb. 3. More than 400 people attended this event. Skill stations included spin and fly casting, fly-tying, taxidermy, astronomy, woodlands and prairies, trapping and furbearers, turkey and waterfowl calling and ID, retrieving and tracking dogs, archery and BB gun shooting. Many of these stations offered hands-on training.
Participants also got to test their outdoor prowess at the Outdoor Skills Challenge course and the Outdoor Skills Quiz. In addition, seminars were held on Tracking Dogs, Field Preparation for Taxidermy, Birding, Establishing Native Prairies, Trail Cameras, Beginning Trout Fishing, and Use of Cable Restraints.
Alliance members and Southwest Tech staff were assisted by approximately 60 volunteers from all over southern Wisconsin, including the Grant County Starsplitters Club, the River Valley Retriever’s Club, Spring Valley Kennel, Nohr Chapter of Trout Unlimited, Dubuque Fly-fishers, Fly Fisherman’s Lair Guide Service, Pheasants Forever, Stitzer Sportsman’s Club, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, hunter safety instructors, Wisconsin Trappers Association, Cabela’s, Extreme Taxidermy, SWTC CAPS Club, Student Senate, auto collision repair and refinish technician students, as well as private individuals who all helped make this event a huge success. “It couldn’t have happened without them,” said Chuck Horn, Grant County Outdoor Sport Alliance president.
