New scholarship format unveiled at Southwest Tech

Process to help bridge financial gap

Fennimore -

Officials at Southwest Wisconsin Technical College are revising the scholarship process to make sure financial gaps for each student are addressed. Rather than the traditional model of having students fill out a scholarship application, Southwest Tech will now be funding students according to their individual financial gaps. Those gaps are identified through student success plans that each student puts together with the assistance of college staff. “Our main priority is to make sure our students have the resources necessary to graduate on time, and begin their careers as soon as possible,” said Dr. Jason Wood, Southwest Tech president. “This new scholarship model will identify specific student needs, and the funds will be allocated to offset those needs.”

The first round of scholarship selection will begin soon and it will continue at various times throughout the year. Students will be notified of their awards through their college email.

To be eligible for 2025-26 scholarships, students must complete a financial budget with a college staff member, and submit a FAFSA or be FAFSA-exempt. The financial budget helps each student assess personal income and expenses, including the cost of college, and identify any financial gaps. This process will allow students to understand what additional support they may need for both personal and educational expenses.

During the scholarship selection process, the Southwest Tech Foundation, in conjunction with Financial Aid staff, will continue to follow the scholarship criteria outlined by the donor.

The long-range plan is to help all students eliminate their financial gap.
