Traveling civil rights exhibit to be displayed on campus

Fennimore -

In conjunction with the college’s Diversity Week, Southwest Tech will be hosting the mobile exhibit, “Patient No More: People with Disabilities Securing Civil Rights.” The displays include exhibition text in braille, large-print panels, audio description tracks, and audio-described and captioned videos to make the show as accessible as possible. The exhibit explores the fight for civil rights for those with disabilities in the 1970s. It includes 10 freestanding, modular kiosks, each consisting of three panels.

The Diversity Work Group on campus is sponsoring the exhibit’s presence. “I was researching different ways to promote diversity in our school community when I came across this exhibit,” said Chantel Hampton, social science instructor, and member of the Diversity Work Group. “We think this will make a profound statement here on campus and will be well-received by those who are able to visit.”

The exhibit will be on display on campus beginning January 30. It is free to attend and will be available to the public every Wednesday from 12:30-3:30 p.m. until March 10. More dates and times will be added as more facilitators become available.

School groups and community organizations are encouraged to attend.

Anyone interested in attending or bringing a group, may contact Hampton at (608) 822-2658 or champton@swtc.edu.
