Active education the focus of upcoming camps
Sessions filling fast

Area middle and high school students will have opportunities in June and July to experience active educational events at Southwest Wisconsin Technical College. Tech Trek, for students entering 7-9 grade is scheduled for July 16, 17, 18, and 19. The Charger Tech Academy, organized for students entering 8-12 grade, is planned for June 19 and 20.
Instructors will be on campus during those dates to offer hands-on learning opportunities to the students, allowing them to explore potential career paths, while having fun at the same time.
Tech Trek is being coordinated with the Fennimore School District Summer School Program, and is being offered during the morning for four days. The Southwestern School District in Hazel Green, Wisconsin, is also participating. “There are a wide variety of options,” said Mary Johannesen, career prep and dual enrollment coordinator.
The Charger Tech Academy is an extension of the Program Visit Days, which occur on the Southwest Tech campus during the school year. High school students visit classrooms during those days and are exposed to various careers. The academy will provide the actual hands-on portion of the experience.
Some of the sessions for the academy include Brush Lettering/Graphic and Web Design; Culinary Chili Cook-Off; Welding, and several others. The cost is $15 per each half-day session.
Session options for Tech Trek include Garden Art Welding, Pasta Perfect, Basic Crime Scene Processing, and others. The cost is $25 per student.
“It’s a really great opportunity for students,” said Johannesen. “For the younger students, to just explore different areas, hands-on and they get to try out different things. For the high school-age students, it might help them narrow down a career choice that they are thinking about. If they are thinking about going into welding, this gives them a half day or a full day to experience that area and maybe compare it to a different area, so if they would do the CNC one day and the welding another day and learn the differences between each career.”
The deadline to apply for Charger Tech Academy is May 31, while the deadline to apply for Teck Trek is June 15. There are a limited number of slots for each session.
