Clay target team finishes in top 10 at national competition

Southwest Wisconsin Technical College Clay Target Team finished in the top 10, out of 18 teams, at the recent USA Clay Target League Championship. The competition was held Nov. 2 and 3 in Bunker Hill, Illinois.

Cooper Subjek, from Melrose-Mindoro, won the Annie Oakley competition.

The team included 23 competitors at the national championship. Jake Ward, from Black River Falls, was tied for first place after the first day. He hit 99 out of 100 targets on Saturday. He finished 12th, overall.

The regular season wrapped up prior to the national championship. Southwest Tech competes against six teams in the USA Clay Target League from across the country, including South Dakota, Missouri, Minnesota, New York, and more. This year, the team finished third in the conference.

The team competes at the Muscoda Sportsmen’s Club. This year, there were 29 students, representing 14 programs, on the team that competed in the conference competition. There were 22 males and seven females on this year’s team. Ward and Paul Krachey, from Wauzeka, tied for eighth place in conference, with an average score of 24/25. The highest finishing female was Maya Schroeder, from Portage, who finished sixth, with an average of 23.7/25. Erica Rose Ludlum, Mineral Point, finished eighth in conference, with an average of 23.5/25.

The clay target team will compete again in the spring. The team is open to all students.

In addition, the team will host the Southwest Tech High School Trapshoot Invitational on Saturday, May 3 in Muscoda.
