Southwest Wisconsin Technical College’s new Precision Agronomy program has received a significant boost thanks to a generous $10,000 gift from the MidWestOne Bank Foundation. This contribution will allow the Southwest Tech Foundation to purchase state-of-the-art equipment, enhancing the educational experience for students in this cutting-edge field.

“This investment will provide our students with invaluable, hands-on experiences, transforming their education and equipping them with essential skills for the future,” said Angie Herting, director of development and major gifts at Southwest Tech. “By equipping our classrooms with the latest tools, we are not only enriching the students’ learning experience but also contributing to the advancement of agricultural education. The skills and knowledge gained will have a direct, positive impact on local farms and agribusinesses, fostering innovation and efficiency in our community.”

The new equipment will assist students in engaging in real-time data collection and analysis, mirroring the activities of modern agricultural professionals. The students will participate in fieldwork that enhances their understanding of crop management, soil health, and environmental sustainability. They will learn to use advanced technology and techniques, ensuring they are well-prepared for careers in farming or the agronomy industry.

“The MidWestOne Foundation is proud to invest in cutting-edge Precision Agronomy equipment for Southwest Wisconsin Technical College,” stated Roger Dammen, first vice president/market president for MidWestOne Bank. “Southwest Tech serves over 30 school districts in southwest Wisconsin and is a leading college in providing the skills necessary for a prosperous career path for our students. Precision Agronomy is a new program for the college that will provide the skill sets needed in today’s high tech farming practices. MidWestOne is proud of our long-term partnership with SWTC and hopes our $10,000 donation will broaden the skills of tomorrow’s ag leaders.”

The new equipment will not only benefit the students on campus, but younger students in the area, as well. “We plan to share our resources with local high schools, reaching students who are enrolled in agriculture-related courses,” said Herting. “Specifically, the 40 high school students in the Farm Business and Production Management program will gain access to this advanced equipment, enriching their learning experience and sparking an early interest in agronomy and related fields.”

This project represents a significant investment in the future of agricultural education, impacting over 100 students annually and fostering a community-wide culture of innovation and excellence in agronomy and agribusiness.

Precision Agronomy is a cutting-edge farming practice that leverages technology to boost crop yields and profitability while reducing resource usage. Southwest Tech’s Precision Agronomy program is slated to begin in the fall of 2025.
