Prairie du Chien Outreach Center profile – Mike McCoy
Fennimore -Mike McCoy is a Basic Education Instructor at the Prairie du Chien Outreach Center.
Where are you from/where do you live?
I’m originally from Prairie du Chien. After teaching in northern Wisconsin for two years, I returned to my hometown and taught at Prairie Middle School for 32 years.

How did you get into education?
My Grandma McCoy was a teacher, and my dad was a teacher. I considered other fields but once I decided that I wanted to teach (and coach), it just felt natural. Other than marrying my wife, it was the best decision I’ve ever made.
What do you enjoy about teaching?
I’ve had many former students contact me and relate a story from my classroom (or from the playing field). Often times it’s something I have forgotten, but obviously it stuck with them for years. It’s incredible to consider the impact a teacher has on students’ lives.
What does the outreach site offer?
The Prairie Outreach Center offers a safe and positive place for all adult students. Students can work at their own pace, whether it be preparing for their GED/HSED, practicing basic computer skills, or learning English as a second language. All services are FREE!
Why is the outreach site important to the community?
Adults need an opportunity to continue to learn. It’s rewarding to see the students support and learn from one another. I have learned a lot too…especially from my ELL students.
What is it like when a student earns his/her GED/HSED?
Many of my students say they want the GED/HSED to better themselves, but they also are making the commitment to set an example to their children. It’s hard work, but once accomplished, it’s a proud moment.
What feedback have you received from students who have received training or education at the site?
Many students say that one of the most difficult parts of the process is to take that first step. Somehow, they find the courage walk in the Outreach’s front door and cross that hurdle. It’s worth it.
