“Data analytics is in about every industry,” said Sasha Annan, data analyst and Southwest Tech instructor for the program, noting healthcare, finance, education, manufacturing, and others, rely heavily on data analytics. “Through the collection, cleaning, organizing and summarizing of data, data analysts assist businesses streamline their processes and ultimately, their bottom line. We use data to uncover trends.”

Annan earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Cape Coast. In addition, she earned a Master of Science in Mathematics from Youngstown State University, and another Master of Science in Statistical Science from the University of Idaho. She taught in higher education for 10 years and currently works as a data analyst. “My passion is seeing students succeed,” she said. “I made use of data on a daily basis in my previous teaching role.”

Students in the new Southwest Tech program will learn a broad set of skills, similar to what Annan utilizes in the field. They will learn to collect data from multiple sources. They will use various software tools to help organize and analyze those data sets. In addition, they will create graphs and charts to better visualize their data collection. They will also put that data into reports. “The students will gain problem solving and critical thinking skills,” she said. “Communication and teamwork will also be an important part of the program.”

“We are excited to offer this new associate degree program, which offers a wide variety of dynamic career opportunities,” said Kim Maier, executive director of Innovative and Alternative Learning at Southwest Tech. “Data is everywhere and we want to give our students the expertise to thrive as they advance through their career.”
