Job responsibilities: Shelter advocate: Provide support, advocacy, resources, information and referrals to clients. Answer crisis and business calls (provide advocacy, resources, information and referrals to callers if appropriate). Play games and do fun and engaging activities with resident children.
How did Southwest Tech prepare you for your current position? A lot of the knowledge I have obtained through the classes specific for the Human Services field have been brought into use through my job. This program has helped expand my knowledge in the best and most appropriate way to deal with each individual I come in contact with.
Why did you choose your field of study? I’ve always loved helping people and wanted to find a way I could keep helping others and continue my education.
What advice would you have for other students thinking about advancing their education? If your heart is truly invested in what you plan on attending school for, absolutely go for it! It’s hard work, but completely worth it in the end. We need more passionate people in every field of study. Set your mind to it and go for it!
