Southwest Tech Spotlight: Dylan McGuire

As a young boy growing up, Dylan admired his father and his role as a police officer. He hoped to be just like him when he grew up. Dylan also loved working with his hands and was mechanically inclined. Most of all, he noticed and enjoyed the way things looked, especially cars.

“I remember thinking paint colors were the coolest thing in the whole world. They could make any car look amazing.”

When Dylan graduated from Darlington High School in 2009, his brother offered him a job right out of high school at his business, McGuire Roofing and Construction.

“I was hired on the spot and couldn’t turn that down. I enjoyed construction and working with my brother, but I knew it wasn’t what I wanted to do my whole life.”

After five years in the workforce, Dylan decided it was time to go to attend college and explore his passion.

“I chose the Automotive Collision Repair & Refinish Technician program because motors just aren’t my thing. I really enjoy body work and making a car look great.”

Dylan already has a job working in his career field at Collision Specialists in Livingston. His boss, owner Greg Slack, has a history of hiring Southwest Tech graduates and hired Dylan as an apprentice.

“We have been working with Dylan and his instructor, Greg Wubben, to teach techniques during class that he is able to use later in the day at work. There were certain things that we needed Dylan to know immediately and by working with the instructor helped with that process. Dylan is a hard working individual that understands that a good work ethic is necessary to excel in this industry.”
