Southwest Tech Spotlight: Jasmine Anderson

Jasmine’s favorite childhood memories include playing at her grandparent’s dairy farm and dreaming about becoming a fashion princess. In 4th grade, she wrote a little book about designing prom dresses and being a princess.

“As much as I love fashion, I love my life here in Southwest Wisconsin better. I decided rather than move to a city to pursue fashion, I would stay in the country and start a new dream.”

Jasmine graduated from Kickapoo in 2013. In high school, she was involved in FFA and musicals. Jasmine really enjoyed her agriculture classes, after spending so much time on the farm, they made sense to her. Jasmine also took a few computer classes and was the physical education helper.

“Because I’m the youngest in my family and didn’t even have younger cousins, I have never been around kids much. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed helping out with the physical education classes. The kids loved me and I totally loved them too! After that, I started thinking about career possibilities within the education system.”

Jasmine couldn’t see herself as a teacher, so she looked at things from a different angle.

“The secretary at our school has been there ever since I can remember. There is a certain amount of job security, plus it would be so rewarding. I would love to spend my days in such a positive environment.”

Jasmine started looking at colleges to expand her skills.

“Both of my parents graduated from Southwest Tech. My dad completed the Dairy Herd Management program and my mom the Office Support Specialist program. They both had good experiences, so I knew that at Southwest Tech I wouldn’t be disappointed.”

Jasmine chose the Administrative Professional program and her prediction was right. With the hands-on learning and personal attention that her instructor offers, she will be ready to enter the workforce upon graduation.

“One of my favorite parts of the program is the 72-hour field study. I completed my field study where my mom works at Hofmeister Insurance Agency in Hillsboro. With this real job experience, I had the opportunity to really learn the ropes and roles of an administrative professional.”

Jasmine has also had the opportunity to develop her skills as a student employee in the Student Services department at Southwest Tech, operating the front desk.

“In this position, I am performing many of the duties that I will be responsible for as a receptionist after graduation. I answer phone calls, work with the database, and assist students in various circumstances. If someone else can’t make it in to work, I’m always one of the first to volunteer for them.”

Jasmine stays involved on campus as Student Ambassador and as a member of Student Senate.

When she isn’t in class or helping out on campus, Jasmine can be found spending time with her family, friends, and her boyfriend, Brandon. She enjoys camping, swimming, and, of course, shopping! She also enjoys being with animals, especially her sassy blue cockatoo, Lucky.
