Student Spotlight: Morgan Hansen

Morgan Hansen. Loves Kids. Early Childhood Education Student.

Morgan graduated from Mt. Horeb High School in 2014. She was a cheerleader for both football and basketball. During her senior year, Morgan was the captain of her squad. A year after graduating, Morgan made the decision to stay with her uncle and family in South Korea.

“While my uncle was stationed in South Korea, he invited me to stay for a summer. After spending some time there, I stayed the whole year because I found a lot of babysitting jobs. I had 6 families other than my aunt and uncle that I babysat for. I started watching my cousin and knew I would have to stay longer. She always keep me on my toes and we were always doing something. It was also very beautiful there.”

While living in South Korea, Morgan was able to tour many places.

“The experience was so cool. I saw a lot of cool things like the Demilitarized Zone between South and North Korea. I also went to the Capital of South Korea, Seoul, mostly for shopping but there was also a palace that we visited.”

After years of babysitting, Morgan knew she wanted to work with kids as a career.

“My brother came to Southwest Tech for the CNA program, then returned for the Nursing program. He had such great things to say about the campus. I knew a big college wasn’t for me, so I looked into it more.”

She enrolled in the Early Childhood Education Associate Degree program at Southwest Tech.

“I originally wanted to be a nurse, but as I got older and looked into the CNA course, I was like no way. I love kids, so I decided on Early Childhood Education because I knew it would be a good fit. I talked my parents into letting me go to South Korea I by saying that I would babysit and take care of kids to see if that’s truly what I want to do and I loved taking care of them. The program is really hands-on. I enjoy taking the kids for walks around school, seeing their faces light up when they see the other kids brings a smile to my face and to those in the halls.”

Morgan is also a member of the Student Ambassador team.

“Being a Student Ambassador has really helped me out. I have stepped out of my comfort zone and am less shy. During training, I conquered my fear of heights by going on the giant swing at Bethel Horizons.”

After completing the Early Childhood Education program, Morgan wants to transfer to a university with the ultimate goal of becoming a kindergarten teacher.
