Orientation

In order to begin this class, all students must attend the MANDATORY orientation session.

DEADLINE TO REGISTER IS Monday, March 10th, 2025, BY 4:00PM! SEATS ARE LIMITED! Apply early! Mandatory Face to Face Orientation is March 17th at 4:00pm. This orientation includes picking up the rented laptop and purchasing your textbook and NA folder. Orientation will last until 6:30pm in Room 430 of the main SWTC Building. Attendance is MANDATORY at ALL class and lab dates. Bring laptop/iPad with you to log into Schoology, your Nursing Assistant textbook and folder. Class/lab schedule to be given at 1st class date.

Labs

Lab skills will be offered Tuesday or Wednesday evenings from 4pm to 8:30 pm in the Health Science Bldg., Room 2634/2638. Lab is held weekly on your assigned day for four weeks. You must be able to attend every lab date. Lab Skills: Choose between Tuesday or Wednesday Lab. Tuesdays 3/18, 3/25, 4/1, and 4/8 from 4pm–8:30pm in Rm 2634 OR Wednesdays 3/19, 3/26, 4/2, and 4/9 from 4pm–8:30pm in Rm 2634.

Clinical will take place between 4/27/2025 to 5/16/2025. Please sign up for a future class offering if you have other school, work, or personal obligations during this timeframe that you cannot reschedule or rearrange as in person attendance to orientation, lab, and clinical is mandatory!

Additional Information

For Online/Hybrid Students

All students will be required to attend the In-Person orientation which will include an introduction to Schoology – Southwest Tech’s learning management system. The Schoology orientation will give you an idea of what to expect in an online or hybrid course and specifically orient you to the system.

Listed below are some requirements of an online/hybrid student:

  • Convenient access to a computer with internet access and the capability of installing the LockDown Respondus Browser and a Webcam. No Chromebooks.
  • Frequent use of your college-issued email account
  • Word processing software - Microsoft Word is preferred. Microsoft Office is available free to all Southwest Tech Students – go to this website and use your student email address to sign up - https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/education/products/office.
  • Self-motivation and self-discipline
  • Ability to manage time to successfully complete required course work – 10 – 15 hours per week could be required for this online or hybrid course.

Total Course Hours (lecture, lab, and clinical) = 81 Hours
The Nursing Assistant course is regulated by the Department of Health Services - including course content and number of hours. Attendance is mandatory to ensure compliance with the State of Wisconsin requirements for Nursing Assistant training. Students are required to attend ALL 81 hours without exception to complete the course.

Materials needed before first day of class

  • Mosby’s Textbook for Nursing Assistants, 10th edition (eBook option available), Mosby’s Nursing Assistant Workbook (optional)
  • Chromebooks do not work with Schoology and the Respondus Lockdown Browser required for this course
  • 81 Hour Nursing Assistant Basic Student Learning Packet available at SWTC bookstore
  • Watch with a second hand
  • Shoes: Nonskid, no open toes
  • Scrubs required for clinical portion. Comfortable street clothes for lab
  • Additional supplies for lab will be explained at orientation

  4. Information regarding the Wisconsin Nurse Aide Registry

*Notice to students under 18 years of age: The U.S. Department of Labor issued a ruling in 2011 that allows only nursing assistants 18 years of age and over to assist and operate client lift devices. Therefore, some nursing homes are choosing to hire only nursing assistants 18+ years of age. Please contact the nursing homes directly if you are under 18 and have questions regarding their hiring policy.
